It takes a good diet plan and regular exercises to lose weight and maintain your new body weight and size. However, diet pills for weight loss work just fine for some people. Although these appetite suppressants are not for everyone, you still need exercise and diet to completely lose excess weight.
Doctors usually prescribe these pills to people with at least a BMI of 30 or 27 with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Adipex, Phentermine, and Xenical are the most common prescription pills used to suppress appetite for weight loss reasons.
Your doctor should go through your medical history before prescribing these weight loss pills. It’s important for your medical conditions to be known, for instance, if you have any allergies. Any supplements or medication you’re taking and whether you’re breastfeeding, pregnant or planning to conceive are other factors your doctor must consider before administering a prescription.
Here are the top prescription appetite suppressants for weight loss you need to know.
Diet Pills for Weight Loss
Orlistat (or Xenical)
Orlistat works by preventing your body from absorbing at least 1/3 of the fat you consume. Xenical is the prescription form of this pill. They do offer an over-the-counter version called Alli, however the over-the-counter pill is about half the prescribed dose.
Although Orlistat is approved for long-term use, it comes with numerous side effects such as increased bowel movements, abdominal cramping, leaking oily stool, uncontrollable bowel movements and passing gas. However, these side effects are generally temporary and mild. Eating foods rich in fats can worsen these side effects.
Severe liver injury has been linked to taking Orlistat, however, no evidence exists to support this claim. It’s important to be on a low-fat diet when taking this pill; the fats in your food should be less than 30% of your daily fat-calories intake.
Multivitamin should be taken either two hours prior or after taking this weight loss pill. This has been attributed to the fact that your body’s ability to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K can be impaired by Orlistat. This is the only pill of this kind that’s FDA-approved. All the other diet pills are mainly meant to suppress your appetite.
Adipex (Phentermine)
Phentermine is among the few diet pills that really work. It works by suppressing your appetite. The pill can either be prescribed as Adipex or by its generic name Phentermine. The medication can be prescribed in a variety of dosages, depending on your specific needs. It is approved for use under the supervision of a Doctor. Phentermine has some side effects, so it is important to discuss with your Doctor any prior medical history or medications you may be taking.
One of the main side effects we hear about is insomnia. It is important to take the medication earlier in the day to prevent this from occurring.
People with high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, seizure disorders, congestive heart failure, glaucoma, stroke and heart diseases should not use this appetite suppressant as it can worsen your condition. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and persons with issues related to drug abuse should also not use Phentermine.
As an amphetamine with stimulants hence addictive properties, Phentermine can only be obtained through a prescription.
